Scholar’s Note:This article is a visit and collection of manuscripts taught by Mr. Shui Zhifeng in 2016 to Robert NeBaobao.com Ratingville), a representative of the Boston Confucianism school and the dean of the Boston Theological Academy. Nanleshan Teachers is a philosopher with wide international influence. He has served as the dean of the Humanities VIP and Art School of the New York State University of Stony Creek, and the president of the American Religious Society, the International Chinese Philosophy, the American Metaphysical Society, and the chairman of the Boston Theological Association. Its research covers different fields such as philosophy, theology, religion, ethics, comparative philosophy, and comparative theology. He was also a representative figure in advocating Confucian philosophy for the mainland, along with Professor Du Weiming, the president of the Yanjing Society of Harvard and Professor Bai Fengshang, a major student of the Boston school of philosophy. He was also called the “Boston Confucianism School” because the three of them worked together on both sides of the Charles River in Boston.

Water: Among contemporary Confucian scholars, the methods of treating Confucianism are different. Some people regard it more as religion, some people regard it as a philosophy, and some people are important to treat it from the perspective of civilization. Of course, the three are not completely opposite, and there are many parts that overlap, but from the perspective of conceptual connotation and social effectiveness, the three are still very different. I understand that religion is more a kind of worship, especially a kind of worship of supernatural power; while philosophy can understand it in Han language as a kind of concept about the world. Civilization is a more broad concept. From a broad perspective, it should include religion and philosophy; from a broad perspective, it can be said to represent a set of career methods, value concepts, symbol systems, etc. I understand that in your research framework, Confucianism should be regarded as both a religion, as well as a philosophy and civilization. Can you discuss separately from the perspectives of religion, philosophy and civilization. Is Confucianism’s social effectiveness in these three aspects?
Nan:I think there is a need to define these categories. I define religion as a symbolic engagement with the ultimate. This participation can be like the knowledge of the world, including participation in a worshipped way. This is the meaning of philosophy. Therefore, we need philosophy to define individual components with an existential approach. When Du Weiming talked about Confucianism’s promise of “becoming a saint”, this is a part of the existence theory. In terms of the ultimate mission of life, there are many aspects of Confucianism and Taoism, all of which are related to heaven, earth, and Tao. So, I think that from the perspective of religion, Confucianism is a contractual religion. It also has civilized content, but it has divergent civilizational connotations.
Water:Do you think Confucianism is a religion that is divided between Christianity and Islam? Chinese people have referred to “Confucianism, sing and Taoism” together, calling it the “three religions”, but Confucianism, as one of the “teaching” among them, is more like an educational religion, rather than a religious “teaching”. In the view of modern Confucianism itself, the three cannot be viewed equally, because Confucianism does not have gods, does not trust gods, and opposes belief in gods and Buddhism. Confucianism is essentially about social order, moral ethics and personal taciturnity. In later production, a large number of edits were performed to create drama effects. A study of behavioral standards and self-cultivation. The efforts to reform Confucianism into religion should be said to be a matter of China in modern times. Kang Youwei advocated the establishment of the Confucianism Association that year, and hoped to establish Confucianism as “national religion”, but the consequences were counterproductive, which instead reduced the social voice and influence of Confucianism. Later, in the period of the Confucianism Association, the Confucianism Association was renamed the “Confucianism Association” and was deposed as the religious element in accordance with the laws. Nowadays, there are new Confucian scholars who have tried to reform Confucianism into a religion, hoping to solve ChinaA scholar I know is doing such a task. He has tested the origin of God in Chinese civilization books. I call his best efforts “support Christ to Confucianism”. How do you evaluate such efforts? Do you think that elevating Confucianism to a truly meaningful religion will strengthen the educational effectiveness of Confucianism or will it weaken the humanistic characteristics that Confucianism has?
Nan:There are many different religions. They use divergent methods to describe the ultimate. I think there are three different religious metaphors in the world that describe the ultimate things. The metaphors in Christianity, Episodes and Islamism are represented by a body (i.e., God, the translator’s note), while the metaphors in Hinduism and religion are related to exploring the depth of consciousness. They believe that the intention represented by the monotheistic religion is poor, and the need to eliminate this, you must eliminate the confusion so that the consciousness can concentrate on life. Therefore, it is not as represented by God in the Christian world as a representative of the world, Balloon is not the representative of that metaphor. I think that in Chinese thinking, the self-developed metaphors are naturally emerging, rather than expressed in a personalized way. So Lao Tzu said, “The Tao can be told, but it is very Tao.” Zhou Dunzai said, “The Tao cannot be heard, and the Taiyang cannot be seen, and so on.” This is related to self-occurring. But I think behind all these metaphors, what is necessary is to understand and clarify the relic and confusing things that arise from uncertain things. It explains not a set of repetitive principles, nor is it a certain repetitive thinking. Sometimes you need to treat God as the soul, just like the “holy spirit” that Sophie knows. The deep meaning behind religion is creativity. A creative act produces certain things, which can be a kind of interesting behavior, either a person’s behavior, or a self-developing behavior that flows out from the ground like a spring. So we need to understand that all these metaphors have limitations. Philosophers always say that you must go beyond metaphor.
As I said later, my definition of religion is a symbolic participation in the final things. Confucianism has always been like this. I think there has never been a time when Confucianism focused too much attention on local standards, ultimate things and Taoism. Returning to the “Four Books”, ultimate things are frequently discussed. Career is formed in a specific historical environment, based on how philosophers at that time thought about what you should live under the guidance of the ultimate thing – like a moral commitment. The difference between religious and humanistic notions does not seem to be true. Some humanists and Confucians focus only on art or perhaps only know the authorities’ policies on climate change without paying attention to others. But I think as a movement, the civilizational connotation of ConfucianismThe long and shortage are often broad, including religion, politics, and support for art, etc. As far as I know, some people in China are now trying to revive Confucianism by going to church once a week, in the form of Christianity. This is not to make it more religious, but to make it more like Christianity. I don’t know if this is a good suggestion. I don’t know whether Confucianism can really need to invest in so much real estate, such as buying a church, etc. I think that setting a list of family life and teaching institutions may be like a Sunday worship ceremony.
Water:We understand that in the structure of modern oriental society, Christian religious transformation is a major development. A major feature of modern society is that it has achieved the separation of church and state, and religion is increasingly retreating to the realm of personal worship. Confucianism essentially belongs to socia
